SAPS launches manhunt after triple spade killings in North West

The South African Police Service (Saps) has launched a manhunt for a suspect wanted in connection with the brutal deaths of three people found at a house in the North West province.

Who is being sought

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said authorities are searching for 41-year-old James Mohajane, who is wanted in connection with the murders of his girlfriend, Moipone Lefoka; her sister, Esther Lefoka; and Esther’s boyfriend, Tshepo Molekwa.

What police say happened

Mathe said the three victims were last seen together at a house belonging to Tshepo Molekwa. Police found the victims’ bodies at the house on Sunday morning. “They had allegedly been hacked to death with a spade,” Mathe said.

When police arrived at the scene, Mathe said, Mohajane was nowhere to be found, although his cellphone was recovered at the crime scene. “The motive for the killings is still under investigation,” Mathe added.

Police appeal to the public

The Saps has appealed to anyone with information on Mohajane’s whereabouts to contact Sergeant Nhlapo on 078 918 7746. “Members of the public are urged not to approach or confront the suspect, but to immediately provide information to the police,” Mathe said.

Mathe also said the manhunt comes as the Saps intensifies its fight against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) and serious and violent crimes perpetrated against women, children and vulnerable groups during Women’s Month.

The report also noted a separate incident in Knysna where a midnight raid left a 50‑year‑old Saps Tactical Response Team captain and a 38‑year‑old suspect dead in a shootout. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia visited Knysna, and investigations into related political murders, including the killing of former mayor Aubrey Tsengwa, continue.
