DA councillor and three others remanded in Benoni murder, kidnapping case

A DA councillor and three co-accused were remanded in custody after appearing in Benoni court on charges including murder, attempted murder and kidnapping.

A Democratic Alliance councillor and three co-accused have been remanded in custody after appearing in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on charges that include murder, attempted murder and kidnapping.

Who is charged

The National Prosecuting Authority named the accused as councillor Kabelo Relitilwe Mahonko (40) and three others: Sibusiso Masondo (43), Muzi Des Godie (33) and Lethabo Nhlanhla Makgabo (19). The four appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on the stated charges.

Allegations and injuries

It is alleged the group kidnapped and assaulted Vuyisile Mzwakhe Khananda and another victim after suspecting them of a housebreaking and theft at the councillor’s residence on July 17. According to the NPA, the accused drove with the victims and abandoned them on Longmore Street in Crystal Park, Benoni.

Both victims were taken to hospital for medical treatment; Khananda later succumbed to his injuries, the NPA said.

Arrest, custody and next court date

The NPA said the four accused were arrested on various dates between August 17 and 21 and are currently remanded in custody. The matter was postponed to September 1 for a formal bail application. The NPA indicated the State intends to oppose their release on bail.

The NPA identified Mahonko as a councillor in the Ekurhuleni Municipality.

The accused remain remanded pending the September 1 bail hearing.
