Illegal mining kingpin shot dead in police raid in Carletonville

The National Intervention Unit (NIU) of the South African Police Service (Saps) fatally wounded a wanted illegal mining kingpin during a tracing operation in Carletonville, Gauteng, on Sunday.

Raid led to armed confrontation

Saps spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said NIU members went to a house where the suspect was believed to be hiding, announced themselves and then entered. Officers, Mathe said, followed standard procedure on arrival.

According to Mathe, the suspect “did not welcome the police team and instead allegedly turned his weapon on them, forcing them to open fire.” The confrontation left the suspect fatally wounded.

Weapon and ammunition seized

Police recovered a weapon and ammunition after the shooting. Mathe confirmed that an AK-47 rifle and 125 rounds of AK-47 ammunition were seized at the scene.

Role in illegal mining violence

Mathe said the deceased was well known to police as a central figure driving violence linked to illegal mining in the area. She added the man “is believed to have played a central role in the ongoing conflict between two rival illegal mining groups in the area.”

Crackdown to continue

Saps said it would keep targeting syndicates behind illegal mining and the violence connected to it. Mathe reiterated the service’s commitment, saying:

“The Saps continues to intensify operations aimed at dismantling illegal mining networks, disrupting the activities of criminal syndicates and restoring law and order in communities affected by illegal mining and associated violence.”
