Four men found shot dead in Gqeberha as police launch investigation

Four men were found shot dead in G-West, Walmer, Gqeberha on Saturday evening, and Eastern Cape police have opened an investigation as they appeal to the public for information.

Discovery and victims

The bodies were discovered at about 8.30pm on Saturday. Eastern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said the deceased were four men aged between 20 and 30, and that they had sustained gunshot wounds.

Investigation under way

Police have established an investigation team in the province. “The circumstances surrounding the incident form part of the ongoing investigation,” Colonel Mawisa said. Officers conducted inquiries in the surrounding areas but found no positive leads while trying to identify possible witnesses.

Appeal to the public

No arrests have been made. Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious or who may have information that could assist the investigation to come forward.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the investigating team leader of the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit (SVCU), Lieutenant-Colonel Monde Sithole, on 082 457 2812, their nearest police station or SAPS Crime Stop at 08600 10111.

According to IOL, in a separate incident two weeks earlier six suspected illegal miners were found shot dead on a mountain in Mashobote, near Ngodwana. Mpumalanga police said the bodies were discovered after a local resident reported seeing human bodies on the mountain and that those deceased had gunshot wounds. Police said the circumstances were under investigation and that preliminary inquiries suggested the killings could be linked to rivalry among illegal mining groups.
