How Smart ID applications at bank branches work and when you can walk in

Home Affairs now lets some bank branches process Smart ID applications without prior appointments. But not every branch uses the new system check partner listings first.

South Africans can apply for Smart ID cards at participating bank branches without first booking through Home Affairs but only at branches enrolled in a new digital partnership model. The system, rolled out during 2026, lets some banks capture applicant details and biometrics in-branch so the process does not always start with a Home Affairs office visit.

Two different branch systems

Home Affairs now lists an option to apply for a Smart ID through a Partner Branch on its online portal. At branches operating under the new digital partnership, applicants may visit and complete their Smart ID application and biometric capture without first booking an appointment online.

However, not every branch of a participating bank uses the new model. Some branches still operate under the older eHomeAffairs model, where applicants must complete the online application and book an appointment through the eHomeAffairs system. In other words, “Smart ID at a bank” does not automatically mean you can simply walk in.

Which banks and how to check

The South African reporting named Capitec, Standard Bank and FNB among the first banks rolling out the new system, with the number of participating branches expanding rapidly during 2026. Because services can differ between branches, Home Affairs advises checking whether a specific branch is listed as a Partner Branch on the current My Home Affairs Online system before visiting.

What happens at a partner branch

At a participating digital partner branch, the Smart ID application is handled using the bank’s systems and the branch captures the applicant’s details and biometrics as part of the Smart ID application. The newer system aims to reduce paperwork, queues and the appointment requirements associated with the older process.

Practical takeaway

  • Check the My Home Affairs Online system to see if a branch is listed as a Partner Branch before you go.
  • Do not assume every branch of a listed bank offers walk-in Smart ID services; some still require eHomeAffairs appointments.
  • At partner branches, banks capture details and biometrics as part of the application process.

Note: The bank rollout is ongoing, and participating branches and processes can vary.
