Mpumalanga police net more than 20 suspects in Witbank and Vosman operation

Mpumalanga police say a multi‑agency crackdown in Witbank and Vosman arrested more than 20 suspects, recovered stolen vehicles and seized unlicensed firearms, in an operation that ran from 16 to 20 September.

Joint operation across Nkangala District

The multidisciplinary effort brought together Witbank and Vosman police, the Tactical Response Team (TRT), the Middelburg Flying Squad, the Nkangala Anti‑Hijacking Team, Public Order Policing and tracking companies. Police described the activity as a wide sweep targeting violent crime across the Nkangala District.

Arrests and seizures

Police said the operation arrested more than 20 suspects. Among those arrested were two people found with unlicensed pistols and ammunition; the ammunition will undergo ballistic testing. Officers also apprehended a suspect who was driving a Hyundai H1 minibus stolen in Brakpan earlier this month.

Authorities recovered a stolen vehicle and confiscated multiple firearms during the operation.

Range of offences

Police listed the offences for which people were arrested, including:

• drug possession
• contravention of the Immigration Act
• assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm
• robbery
• kidnapping
• attempted murder
• house robbery
• malicious damage to property
• business burglary
• driving under the influence

Provincial police said the operation targeted a spectrum of crimes from carjackings and house robberies to drug offences and attempted murder.

Police message and next steps

“We will not allow syndicates and violent offenders to terrorise our communities. This operation shows that when we combine intelligence and manpower, we strike hard and effectively.”

The comment was attributed to Colonel Mavela Masondo, a police spokesperson, who said the arrests send a clear message to criminals.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise commended the integrated approach.

“The simultaneous operations in Witbank and Vosman demonstrate our integrated approach to fighting crime. We remain steadfast in our efforts to eradicate violent crimes and ensure the safety of communities across Mpumalanga.”

Police said all suspects are expected to appear in various magistrates’ courts in Nkangala soon.
