Russell Brand found guilty of rape and sexual assault in UK
British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court in London.
The 51-year-old was convicted on Thursday, 5 November, after a jury considered seven charges involving six women and incidents dating between 2004 and 2009.
The verdict marks a significant development in a case that has attracted international attention, particularly because of Brand’s former prominence in the entertainment industry.
Four guilty verdicts, three acquittals
According to CNN, Brand was found guilty of raping a 21-year-old woman he had met after performing at a show in west London in 2009.
The jury also found him guilty of sexually assaulting three other women.
These incidents included groping an MTV employee at a bar in central London in 2004, kissing and groping another woman at her workplace in 2005, and sexually assaulting a woman during an incident involving a massage in 2009.
However, the jury did not find Brand guilty on every charge. He was acquitted of two additional rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.
The verdicts followed approximately eight and a half hours of jury deliberations.
Brand denies the allegations
Throughout the proceedings, Brand denied the charges against him.
His defence maintained that the sexual encounters were consensual, while Brand acknowledged having had a history of reckless sexual behaviour.
The allegations were particularly significant given his public profile as a comedian, actor and television personality.
Brand previously appeared in several Hollywood productions, including Get Him to the Greek and Arthur, and was once among Britain’s recognisable entertainment personalities.
Sentencing expected next week
Following the guilty verdicts, Judge Joel Bennathan indicated that Brand should expect a substantial prison sentence.
His application for bail was rejected, and he was remanded in custody ahead of his sentencing hearing on Monday, 9 November.
The judge’s remarks made clear that the convictions would carry serious consequences, with Brand facing a significant period behind bars.
Police investigation continues
The case has also brought renewed attention to the women who came forward with allegations against the comedian.
London’s Metropolitan Police praised the complainants for their courage in reporting the incidents and participating in the investigation.
Police have also confirmed that Brand remains under investigation in connection with two further rape allegations.
The developments add another chapter to the allegations surrounding the former entertainer, which became widely publicised following media investigations in 2023.
For now, the focus turns to Monday’s sentencing hearing, where the court is expected to determine the consequences of the four convictions.
