Father forgives as two accused are granted bail in McDonald’s drive‑thru killing
Two men were granted R1,000 bail after a 21‑year‑old was fatally stabbed at a McDonald’s drive‑thru in George. The victim’s father offered an emotional farewell at the funeral.
Two men appeared in court and were granted R1,000 bail each after a 21‑year‑old apprentice was stabbed at a McDonald’s drive‑thru in George. The victim’s father offered an emotional farewell at his son’s funeral on Thursday.
What happened
Police said the 21‑year‑old, Reinbrecht Piper, was allegedly stabbed in the chest during an altercation with a group of men at the McDonald’s drive‑thru on Courtenay Street at about 2:25am on Sunday, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie told reporters.
CCTV captured the brawl, police said. Friends identified in reports as Logan, Marco and Stian carried Piper to a car and rushed him to George Hospital, where doctors fought for more than an hour to save him.
Bail and charges
Police initially arrested five men in connection with the incident and later released two, the reporting said. Justin Jafta, 28, and Craig Nelson, 27, face charges of murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. They appeared in the George Magistrate’s Court on Thursday and were granted bail of R1,000 each while represented by their own attorneys. The accused are due back in court on December 3, the report said.
Family farewell
Piper’s funeral took place on Thursday at the LifeConnect Garden Route church. In a letter read to mourners by his sister Jasmine, his father, Hennie, addressed the person who killed his son:
“To the person that ended his young life, I forgive you, just as God has forgiven us all.”
At the service, family members lit candles beside a framed photograph of Piper. A large screen showed images of him and the dates April 25 2005 to September 27 2026.
Speakers at the service described Piper’s character and the family’s grief. Pastor Paul Williams told mourners:
“The truth is, we’re not going to hear his voice again, we’re not going to see his face again in this life… You’ve got to mourn, you’ve got to cry, you’ve got to let it out.”
Piper’s mother, Debbie, spoke of his work as an apprentice at Terayne Electrical, his hobbies, and the close relationship he had with his siblings. In his letter Hennie remembered his son’s humour, faith and kindness and thanked friends and neighbours who helped on the night of the incident.
Responses and investigation
McDonald’s South Africa spokesperson Millicent Maroga said the company was assisting police and had secured CCTV footage for investigators.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred at our restaurant in George,”
she told IOL, adding that the company’s thoughts and condolences were with the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased.
Terayne Electrical said it had attended the service and expressed sadness at the loss. Lieutenant Colonel Pojie said the investigation was ongoing.
