Two convicted in Facebook vehicle scam; sentences suspended
Two people convicted in a Facebook vehicle and taxi scam were sentenced to suspended prison terms after a SAPS investigation linked them to a syndicate luring victims via social media ads.
Two people have been convicted and sentenced after police linked them to a syndicate that used Facebook adverts to dupe victims responding to vehicle and taxi listings. The South African Police Service (Saps) said the case was the result of an organised crime investigation that identified a pattern of deception and coercion at identified premises.
Who was convicted and what happened in court
The accused, 51-year-old Cleopas Msipa and 46-year-old Tshepiso De Beer, appeared in the Stilfontein Regional Court and were convicted of theft on Tuesday, 29 September 2026 after pleading guilty. They were each sentenced to six years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years.
How the syndicate operated
Evidence in court described a scheme in which victims who replied to Facebook advertisements for vehicles and taxis were lured to identified premises. There, groups of men allegedly entered and falsely identified themselves as police officers from Potchefstroom.
Victims were separated and questioned and then told gold-bearing material or diamonds had been discovered at the premises. According to police, the victims were threatened with arrest and forced to hand over cash or transfer funds from their bank accounts.
“In some instances, bank cards were taken and used to conduct transactions at taverns and other businesses,”
said police spokesperson Colonel Anne Magakoe.
Investigation and related arrests
Police said the Provincial Organised Crime Unit, working with Crime Intelligence, carried out an entrapment operation in March 2023 that led to the arrest of eight suspects. Further investigation and identification parades linked suspects to additional cases showing a similar modus operandi.
The matter against the remaining three accused was postponed to Wednesday, 21 October 2026. Those three were remanded in custody for allocation of a new trial date.
Police reaction and public warning
North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Adams commended Detective Constable Thabiso Pheela and the multidisciplinary team for their work in bringing the accused to court.
The Saps urged members of the public to exercise caution when responding to advertisements on social media platforms, especially those involving the sale of vehicles and other high-value items. The police said it is important to verify the legitimacy of sellers and transactions before making payments or sharing personal and banking information.
