Durban man jailed for life after woman trafficked, raped and held in brothel
A Durban man was sentenced to life after luring a woman to KwaZulu‑Natal with a fake job, then raping, assaulting and imprisoning her in a brothel. Co‑accused given 15 years.
A Durban man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after a court found he lured a woman to KwaZulu‑Natal with promises of employment and then raped, assaulted and detained her in a brothel.
Court hands down sentences
Ifeanacho Ifeanyi, who is 40 years old, appeared in the Pinetown Regional Court on 3 October 2026, where the life sentence was imposed. His co‑accused, 35‑year‑old Mapule Tshibangila, was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment after being convicted of trafficking in persons.
How the case began
The matter originates from 5 September 2022, when members of the Hawks’ Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Economic Protected Resources (EPR) section responded to a report of suspicious activity at a property on Hopewell Street in Malvern. Durban Metro Police and Malvern police station also attended the scene.
Officers established that the premises was being used as a brothel. Six occupants were found at the address and one female was identified as a victim; police took her to hospital for a medical examination and carried out further investigations.
Investigation findings
Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, a police spokesperson, said the probe showed the victim had been lured from Johannesburg by Tshibangila under false pretences of a legitimate job opportunity in Durban. The investigation determined the woman was raped, assaulted and kept against her will.
“A case of trafficking in persons and keeping a brothel was registered at Malven police station,”
Mhlongo said Ifeanyi and Tshibangila were arrested and charged. Additional charges were added during the investigation after it was established the victim had been lured for prostitution purposes and other occupants were using the premises for prostitution. The pair’s bail application was opposed and they were remanded in custody. They were found guilty on 19 August 2026.
Police response
Acting KZN Police Provincial Head Brigadier Zenobia Mulligan welcomed the sentencing and commended officers involved in the investigation.
The case underscores ongoing police efforts to investigate and prosecute human trafficking and related sexual offences.
