Former Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena has escaped unharmed after a vehicle crash in Vanderbijlpark.

The incident reportedly happened on Sunday near the intersection by Hertz Boulevard, opposite Emfuleni Estate.

According to residents in the area, Mokoena allegedly lost control of his vehicle while approaching a roundabout before crashing into the wall of Trevasa Court.

The former national team captain was not injured in the crash.

Mokoena had just returned from Johannesburg

Mokoena told The Sedibeng Ster that he had returned home on Saturday after spending the week involved in South African Football Association (SAFA) development activities.

He had been attending the SAFA and FIFA Talent Development Scheme U15 Inter-Provincial Tournament at Marks Park in Johannesburg.

The tournament forms part of efforts to identify and develop young football talent in South Africa.

Following the crash, claims circulated alleging that Mokoena may have been under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred.

Mokoena has not responded to those allegations, and they have not been established as fact.

Crash comes amid another football-related case

The Vanderbijlpark incident comes as another South African footballer faces the consequences of a separate fatal road crash.

Former Sekhukhune United player Mokete “Shaune” Mogaila recently pleaded guilty to culpable homicide and failing to render assistance following a crash that killed nine-year-old Gomolemo Mavimbela in Tembisa.

Mogaila appeared in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court and entered a guilty plea in terms of Section 112(2) of the Criminal Procedure Act.

The charges relate to a collision on Andrew Mapheto Road during the early hours of 30 October 2024.

Mogaila convicted over fatal Tembisa crash

According to the National Prosecuting Authority, Mogaila admitted that his vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic before colliding with a car carrying Keo Mavimbela and two children.

The crash killed Gomolemo and left her mother and 13-year-old Thando Khethiwa seriously injured.

Mogaila left the scene following the collision but later handed himself over to police.

Investigators reportedly found alcohol bottles and drugs inside his vehicle.

The NPA welcomed the conviction, describing it as an important step towards justice for the affected families.

Mogaila was convicted on all the charges and the matter was postponed to 17 November 2026 for sentencing.

For Mokoena, meanwhile, the Vanderbijlpark crash ended without reported injuries, although questions surrounding the circumstances of the incident continue to circulate.
