Gauteng residents have been warned to prepare for a hot week, with temperatures expected to climb into the 30s as the province braces for the season’s first heatwave.
Regional forecaster Gauteng Weather warned that temperatures would rise significantly this week, with some areas expected to experience highs in the upper 30s.
“Hot week ahead,” Gauteng Weather said.
Johannesburg is forecast to record a minimum of 13°C before temperatures rise to 31°C on Friday, while Pretoria is expected to reach 33°C, with a minimum of 15°C.
The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services has urged residents to take precautions during the hot weather, including drinking plenty of water, staying hydrated and avoiding direct sunlight, particularly between 11am and 3pm.
Prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures can cause heat exhaustion and heat cramps, potentially progressing to heatstroke.
Meanwhile, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of severe thunderstorms in parts of the Eastern Cape, with a yellow level 2 warning issued for most areas outside the province’s extreme north-east.
The weather service also warned of extremely high fire danger in parts of the Northern Cape, North West, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, while a heatwave is expected to persist in parts of north-western KwaZulu-Natal until Tuesday.
Residents are advised to monitor official weather updates and take appropriate precautions as hot conditions persist across parts of the country.
