A 33-year-old man has been sentenced to 27 years’ direct imprisonment for the murder of a 32-year-old woman whose body was found at Coronation Dam in Krugersdorp in August 2025.
Mcedisi Siyo received the sentence from the Palm Ridge High Court last week on Thursday, 15 October, after pleading guilty to murder and defeating the ends of justice, according to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
He was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment for murder and a further two years for defeating the ends of justice.
How the investigation unfolded
The case dates back to 2 August 2025, when the woman’s body was discovered at Coronation Dam with visible head injuries. Her identity was initially unknown.
About a week later, a member of SAPS from Brackendowns Police Station took a missing person’s file to Krugersdorp SAPS. The woman had been reported missing by Siyo, and her family subsequently identified her body.
Warrant Officer James Jacobus Ferreira took over the missing person’s investigation and established a link to the murder case.
During the investigation, the woman’s white Suzuki Swift was recovered two blocks away from Roodepoort Police Station. Forensic examinations of the vehicle revealed blood belonging to the deceased.
Investigators also obtained and analysed Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) reports, which provided further evidence linking the vehicle to the investigation.
Investigation exposed inconsistencies
Siyo had told police that he dropped the woman off at a train station for a business meeting. However, further investigation uncovered inconsistencies in his account and established that he had attempted to mislead investigators.
Police continued searching for Siyo after he evaded them for a period. Investigators eventually received information that he had allegedly been admitted to hospital.
Ferreira went to the hospital, where Siyo was arrested and taken to Krugersdorp SAPS.
Gauteng police welcomed the sentence, crediting the investigating officer and the team involved in bringing the case to its conclusion.
Siyo will serve 27 years’ direct imprisonment for the two offences.
