54 undocumented foreign nationals arrested during Gauteng festive season operation

Police arrested 54 undocumented foreign nationals during a roadblock near Soweto as part of a Gauteng-wide crime prevention operation aimed at improving public safety ahead of the festive season.

The operation, led by Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni on Saturday night, 17 October, also resulted in 22 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol and the closure of eight liquor outlets for allegedly failing to comply with the law.

According to SAPS, officers conducted vehicle searches along Impala Road in the Soweto and Roodepoort area as part of Operation Shanela II, a broader effort involving police and other law enforcement partners.

Eight liquor outlets shut down

Liquor outlets were among the establishments targeted during the operation, with eight premises closed for non-compliance with the Liquor Act. Five further arrests followed the inspections.

The enforcement action was aimed at ensuring businesses comply with liquor legislation, particularly as authorities step up policing ahead of the busy festive season.

Environmental health inspectors also visited 14 spaza shops, where fines were issued for unhygienic conditions and other compliance failures.

875 suspects arrested across Gauteng

The operation formed part of wider policing efforts across the province, with detectives arresting 875 suspects during tracing operations for various alleged offences.

Of those arrested, 185 suspects were linked to cases involving crimes against women and children, according to SAPS.

The figures reflect the scale of detective operations taking place across Gauteng, although police did not provide a breakdown of the individual offences or the locations where these arrests were made.

Multiple agencies involved

The operation brought together several organisations, including SAPS, the Department of Home Affairs, metropolitan police, private security companies and Community Police Forums.

Their involvement allowed officers to focus on several areas at once, from immigration enforcement and suspected drunk driving to liquor licensing compliance and public health inspections.

With the festive season approaching, police operations of this kind are expected to remain an important part of efforts to address crime and improve compliance with the law.

For motorists, the arrests also serve as a reminder of the consequences of driving under the influence, while businesses selling alcohol face scrutiny over whether they are operating within the law.

SAPS has not provided further details about the individual cases or indicated when those arrested are expected to appear in court.
