Lion found in Gauteng’s Vaal area, SAPS confirms
A lion reported roaming freely in the Redan area near Meyerton and Vereeniging has been located, with the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirming that arrangements have been finalised for its safe relocation.
The sighting prompted a search involving Vereeniging police, the SAPS K9 unit and other role-players, including private security drone operators.
According to a report published by The Citizen on Thursday, 15 October, police were alerted to a social media post about the animal at approximately 4am on Wednesday.
Security guard reportedly spotted the lion
The lion was reportedly spotted by a security guard in Redan during the early hours of Wednesday, 14 October.
According to The Citizen, the guard initially mistook the animal for something smaller before using his phone’s torch and realising it was a lion. He reportedly took a photograph before fleeing the area.
The sighting prompted concern among residents as authorities worked to locate the animal.
SAPS confirms lion has been located
SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili confirmed that the lion had been located and that arrangements had been finalised to move it to a secure environment.
The animal’s ownership remains unknown, and investigations are continuing to establish where it came from.
Residents in Redan, Meyerton, Vereeniging and surrounding areas were urged to remain calm and allow authorities and wildlife professionals to complete the operation safely.
Wildlife park denies ownership
Bloufontein Wildlife Park in Meyerton confirmed that the lion did not belong to its facility.
The park stated that checks had been conducted and all animals under its care were accounted for, with no missing lions or other animals reported.
Police have also raised concerns about false and unverified information circulating on social media, urging members of the public to rely on official updates rather than share unconfirmed reports.
