High Fashion Meets Heart: Laduma Ngxokolo on Life with Madumanne

Fashion designer Laduma Ngxokolo has built a global design empire through MaXhosa Africa, a brand internationally celebrated for its rich cultural storytelling through fashion. His signature geometric patterns, vibrant colourways, and modern interpretations of traditional Xhosa beadwork have graced runways from Johannesburg to Paris. Yet behind the high-fashion shows, global accolades, and creative intensity lies a deeply personal anchor: his beloved dog, Madumanne.

So, who is Madumanne?

Laduma Ngxokolo, whose work continues to celebrate identity, heritage and self-expression.

To Laduma, the answer is simple: he is family.

“Madumanne is much more than a pet, he is family. He has been a constant companion, bringing joy, comfort, and a unique energy into our home,” Laduma explains.

Meet Madumanne

A story of friendship, loyalty and family: Laduma Ngxokolo with Madumanne.

What makes Madumanne special to Laduma Ngxokolo? His personality, loyalty and the happiness he brings to everyday life.

“Madumanne has a unique character that makes him impossible not to love. He’s loyal, affectionate, and always brings a sense of happiness wherever he goes.”

For Laduma, time with Madumanne is also a welcome departure from work.

“An ordinary day with Madumanne is usually about slowing down. Whether we’re playing or simply spending time together, he brings out a much more relaxed and playful side of me.”

It is perhaps this ability to switch off that makes the relationship so meaningful. After all, even a global creative entrepreneur needs moments that have nothing to do with deadlines, collections or business.

Has pet parenthood influenced Laduma’s creativity?

In a more subtle way, Laduma says. “I wouldn’t say Madumanne has directly influenced my process, but he has reminded me of the emotional connections we have with the things and people we love.” And that connection does have a natural link to the ideas that underpin his work. “I am always interested in storytelling and identity, and pets naturally become part of our stories and our families.”

For Laduma, cultural storytelling through fashion is about knowing where you come from while continuing to evolve. He describes Xhosa culture as the foundation of MaXhosa, “but it is not a limitation”. That same thinking can be applied to the way pets become part of our own identities.

Laduma says, “being a pet parent has shown me that self-expression extends beyond ourselves. The way we care for our pets, include them in our lives, and celebrate them says a lot about who we are.”

A little fashion for Madumanne

That philosophy found a playful expression when Laduma created a matching jersey for Madumanne. “It was really a fun expression of our bond,” he says, adding that it opened up ideas about what could be explored around pet wear in future.

But for Laduma, the matching look was ultimately less about fashion and more about connection. “I had designed a cardigan for myself, and creating a matching jersey for Madumanne felt like a playful and meaningful extension of that idea. It was less about fashion and more about celebrating a relationship that brings so much joy.”

And perhaps that is the best answer to how pets can become part of personal identity and self-expression: sometimes it is not about making a statement at all. Sometimes it is simply about celebrating the ones who have become part of your story and protecting them. Which is why Dotsure is such an important part of Laduma and Madumanne’s story. “Dotsure has given us confidence that Madumanne’s health and wellbeing are protected, allowing us to focus on enjoying every moment with him,” say Laduma.

Laduma turned to the wholehearted pet insurer because he realised that, “one of the biggest responsibilities of being a pet parent is making sure your pet is cared for, no matter what life brings. Knowing that support is available when needed provides reassurance and makes it easier to give him the care and attention he deserves as an important member of our family.”

Dotsure Limited (Registration number 2006/000723/06) is a licensed non-life insurer and authorised financial services provider (FSP39925). Voted South Africa’s Best Pet Insurance 2023-2026 by readers of The Star, Die Burger, Beeld, City Press and Rekord.
