M1 freeway shut in both directions as SAMWU wage protest disrupts Johannesburg traffic

Motorists travelling through Johannesburg’s CBD and Braamfontein face major delays after protest action over wage disputes forced the closure of the M1 freeway in both directions near Smit Street.

The closure affects northbound and southbound traffic at the Smit Street on-ramps and off-ramps, with congestion expected along the M1 corridor as commuters are redirected onto alternative routes.

According to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) – Communications Unit, the disruption follows protest action by members of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) over wage disputes. JMPD officers have been deployed to the affected area to manage traffic, implement diversions and help motorists move safely away from the protest.

Motorists urged to avoid Braamfontein interchange

Drivers heading into or through central Johannesburg are advised to avoid the M1 near the Braamfontein interchange and use alternative routes where possible. The JMPD has recommended the following diversions:

  • From Sandton and Rosebank: Southbound motorists should exit at Empire Road or Jan Smuts Avenue and travel through Parktown towards routes around the outer CBD.
  • From Booysens and southern Johannesburg: Northbound motorists should consider Booysens Road or use the M2 East and Joe Slovo Drive to bypass the central city.
  • For east-west travel: Commuters can consider the M2 highway, M11 via Victoria Avenue and Joubert Park, or the N1 Western Bypass to avoid the CBD core.

Motorists should approach diversion routes carefully and follow instructions from traffic officers stationed in the area.

Commuters warned to expect delays

The closure could significantly affect travel times, particularly during peak-hour traffic when vehicles are redirected away from the affected section of the freeway. Drivers are urged to allow extra time for their journeys and, where possible, avoid travelling through the affected area until the situation changes.

The protest centres on wage disputes involving municipal workers, with the immediate impact being felt by motorists travelling through one of Johannesburg’s key traffic corridors.

The JMPD has advised road users to remain alert and comply with traffic officers’ instructions while diversions remain in place.

Motorists should check for further traffic updates before setting off, as routes and travel conditions may change while the protest continues.
