Chocolate cake with espresso: An easy mocha recipe
Some of the best treats come from pairing familiar ingredients in a slightly different way. Coffee brings depth to chocolate, while chocolate softens coffee’s bitterness, creating a combination that feels right at home in a slice of cake or a warm mug on a quiet afternoon.
With National Chocolate Day offering a timely reason to indulge, Jacobs is putting this classic pairing in the spotlight with a chocolate cake recipe that uses brewed instant coffee to give a familiar bake a mocha-inspired twist.
It is the sort of homemade dessert that works for a weekend gathering, an afternoon catch-up with friends or those moments when a cup of coffee simply calls for something sweet on the side.
Why coffee belongs in a chocolate cake
Chocolate already brings plenty of richness to a cake, but coffee adds another layer of flavour. In this recipe, cooled Jacobs Freeze Dried Instant coffee is mixed into the batter alongside milk, cocoa powder and vanilla extract.
The result is a chocolate cake designed around two familiar kitchen staples, without requiring complicated baking techniques or specialist equipment.
The finished cake is assembled in two layers and topped with cocoa buttercream and dark chocolate shavings. It is a straightforward way to make an everyday bake feel a little more special, particularly when there is an occasion worth celebrating.

The recipe makes a layered cake using two 20cm springform tins. Allow time for the cakes to cool before adding the buttercream.
Ingredients
For the cake:
- 100g soft butter, plus extra for greasing the tins
- 275g sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 200g flour
- 75g cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 125ml brewed Jacobs Freeze Dried Instant coffee, cooled
- 125ml milk
- Vanilla extract, to taste
For the buttercream and topping:
- 125g cold butter, diced
- 25g cocoa powder
- 125g icing sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons milk
- Good-quality dark chocolate for garnishing
Equipment: Two 20cm springform cake tins, baking paper, mixing bowls, a whisk, a saucepan and cooling racks.
How to make it
- Prepare the tins and oven.
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease both cake tins with butter and line their bases with baking paper.
- Mix the butter, sugar and eggs.
Whisk the soft butter and sugar together until the mixture becomes light and frothy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Combine the dry and wet ingredients.
Sift the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder into a separate bowl. In another bowl, combine the cooled brewed coffee, milk and vanilla extract.
- Bring the batter together.
Gradually add the dry ingredients and coffee mixture to the butter and egg mixture, stirring as you go. Continue until you have a smooth batter, then divide it evenly between the two prepared tins.
- Bake until ready.
Bake at 180°C for approximately 30–35 minutes. The cakes should spring back when lightly pressed, and a skewer inserted into the centre should come out without wet batter clinging to it.
Remove the cakes from the oven and leave them in their tins for a few minutes. Turn them out carefully and allow them to cool completely on cooling racks before decorating.
Make the chocolate buttercream
- Prepare the icing.
Melt the diced butter in a saucepan over low heat. Stir in the cocoa powder and allow the mixture to cook gently for one to two minutes, stirring continuously.
Remove the saucepan from the heat and leave the mixture to cool slightly. Add the icing sugar and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk one tablespoon at a time, stirring until the buttercream is smooth and glossy. Allow it to cool further so that it thickens enough to spread.
- Assemble the cake.
Place one cooled cake layer on a serving plate and spread half the buttercream over the top. Position the second layer on top and cover it with the remaining buttercream.
- Finish with dark chocolate.
Use a vegetable peeler or grater to create dark chocolate shavings. Scatter them over the buttercream for a simple finishing touch.
The cake is now ready to serve alongside a freshly brewed cup of coffee.
Make the most of your homemade cake
A little planning can make the baking process easier, especially if you are preparing the cake for guests.
- Let the coffee cool first. Adding hot coffee to the batter can affect the temperature of the other ingredients.
- Wait before icing. Decorating warm cake can cause the buttercream to soften too much, so allow both layers to cool completely.
- Take your time with the milk. Adding it gradually to the buttercream helps you control the consistency.
- Keep the finish simple. Dark chocolate shavings add texture and reinforce the chocolate flavour without requiring elaborate decoration.
Once assembled, the cake can be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. According to the supplied recipe, it should remain fresh for around four to five days when stored correctly.
More ways to enjoy coffee and chocolate
For those who prefer their coffee and chocolate combined in a cup rather than a cake, Jacobs also highlights its Cadbury Mocha range, available in Classic, Caramel and Wholenut varieties.
For something a little different, the Dubai Chocolate Cappuccino offers a more adventurous flavour combination, featuring notes of pistachio, saffron and cardamom.
These options provide another way to explore the pairing, whether you prefer a flavoured coffee alongside dessert or want the chocolate notes to be part of your drink itself.
A little indulgence is worth making time for
National Chocolate Day is a convenient excuse to revisit a combination that works in more ways than one. Coffee can bring extra depth to a chocolate bake, while a little dark chocolate on top adds a finishing touch that looks as good as it tastes.
This espresso chocolate cake keeps things approachable, with everyday baking ingredients, a simple two-layer assembly and a cocoa buttercream finish.
Whether you are sharing it with friends or saving a slice for a quiet afternoon, it is a reminder that a homemade treat does not need to be complicated to feel special.
