Joburg’s three best winter dining deals this season
Cape Town might get most of the attention when winter menus start dropping, but a handful of Joburg kitchens are running sharp deals of their own this season. They are smaller in number but no less worth the booking, whether the plan is a proper sit-down dinner in Rosebank or a quick, cheap lunch plate on a Tuesday. Here are three to add to the winter list, as first rounded up by Dineplan.
Rosebank’s boldest claim to winter dinner
The Grill Jichana in Rosebank is not shy about backing its own three-course winter menu, running nightly through to the end of July. It is a straightforward, no-fuss dinner deal for a part of Johannesburg where a sit-down three-course meal at this price is not easy to find.
- Cost: R420 per person
- Location: 12 Sturdee Avenue, Rosebank, Johannesburg
Curry night gets a Friday residency
Maximillien has turned Friday evenings over to a sharing trio of spicy lamb, butter chicken and fragrant Thai prawn curry, built for the table rather than the plate. A glass of house wine adds only R85 to the bill, which makes it an easy standing plan for the end of the working week.
- Cost: R345 per person, wine an extra R85 a glass
- Location: 2 Maude Street, Sandown, Sandton, Johannesburg
Midrand’s lunch hour, solved for under R150
The Palm Terrace at Protea Hotel Midrand keeps its winter lunch deal refreshingly simple: a lamb bunny chow at R120 or a chicken version at R105, both served with atchar, salsa, tzatziki and a soft drink. For a weekday lunch on a Midrand schedule, it is hard to find better value nearby.
- Cost: From R105 per plate
- Location: Ext 20, 14th Street, Noordwyk, Midrand
