Tyla Hints at “Personal” New Album and Amapiano Single ‘Chanel’

South Africa’s very own Grammy-winning pop sensation Tyla is stepping into a bold new chapter — and she’s letting fans know it’s going to sound different.

The 23-year-old “Water” hitmaker has been named one of Variety’s “Power of Young Hollywood” honourees for 2025, appearing alongside international names like Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard. In her cover interview, Tyla opened up about her evolving sound, the creative process behind her next album, and the Amapiano single that has fans buzzing: Chanel.

‘Chanel’ — the song that didn’t make the mixtape

Tyla first hinted at Chanel during the build-up to her We Wanna Party mixtape earlier this year, even previewing it at listening events in London and Berlin. Fans were surprised when it didn’t appear on the final four-track project, which included summer-ready bangers like Mr. Media, Dynamite, and Is It.

Now, she’s confirmed the Amapiano-driven track will get its own release later in 2025 — as part of the run-up to her sophomore album.

A global sound with local roots

While her debut album cemented her as the queen of “popiano” — her own fusion of pop and Amapiano — Tyla says the new record will stretch even further. Recorded across cities like Los Angeles and Barcelona, it blends global influences such as rap and reggaeton without losing the South African heartbeat in the rhythm.

“I had more time to work on this album than the first,” she told Variety. “It feels current, it feels like me. I’m living what I’m singing this time.”

From ‘We Wanna Party’ to what’s next

For Tyla, We Wanna Party was more than just a stopgap release — it was a statement. “I wanted something loud, aggressive and worthy of summer. Mr. Media had to come out before the album; I needed to express those thoughts first,” she explained.

She calls the mixtape “the bridge” between her debut era and the next one. “When the album drops, it’s going to be a completely different vibe than what people are expecting.”

A South African star going global

Tyla’s rise has been meteoric. From topping charts worldwide with Water to making history as the youngest South African to win a Grammy, she’s become a face of modern African pop on the global stage. Her appearance on Variety’s list of Hollywood’s most influential young stars is proof she’s no longer just a homegrown talent — she’s a worldwide force.

On social media, fans have already begun speculating about Chanel, with some dubbing it “the next Water” and others eager to hear her lean deeper into Amapiano. One tweet summed up the mood: “Tyla hasn’t missed yet — if ‘Chanel’ is anything like what she teased in Berlin, it’s game over.”

With Chanel on the way and a more personal, genre-blending album in the works, Tyla’s next move might just redefine the sound of 2025.
