Kevin Pietersen’s luxury safari lodge near Kruger
Kevin Pietersen’s name may still spark cricket debate, but in South Africa’s bush tourism scene, it is also tied to a high-end safari property on the edge of the Kruger National Park.
That property is Umganu Lodge, a five-star safari villa at Elephant Point. Pietersen, who was born in Pietermaritzburg, is one of the names behind the lodge, which later became part of Africa Bitcoin Corporation’s listed investment model. The wider Elephant Point development is managed by the Legacy Group, the same hospitality brand linked to luxury properties in Sandton such as The Leonardo, Michelangelo Towers, and Raphael Penthouse Suites.
A polished bush stay
Umganu opened in 2018 and is built for travellers who want a private safari escape with a luxury finish. The villa accommodates up to 10 guests in five en suite bedrooms, each themed around one of Africa’s Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino.
Inside, the look is modern and spacious, with an open-plan living area, air conditioning, and WiFi throughout. The main suite stands out with a large copper bath and a private heated outdoor plunge pool.
Outside, guests have access to a heated pool, a sunken boma, a braai area, a covered patio, and a wide viewing deck. There is also a telescope for night sky viewing, which adds to the sense that this is more than just a standard bush break.
Right by the Kruger
Location is a big part of the appeal. Umganu sits at Elephant Point on the border of the Kruger National Park, and guests are only about 6km from the Paul Kruger Gate. That places it in one of the country’s best-known wildlife corridors, where luxury tourism and game viewing meet.
Elephant Point has also been named one of South Africa’s top 10 wildlife estates by New World Wealth, giving the development extra status in the local safari market.
More than a celebrity property
Umganu is available for public bookings, but what makes it stand out is the ownership model behind it. In 2022, Africa Bitcoin Corporation acquired a 50 percent stake in the lodge for roughly R15 million and linked it to a listed share structure. In 2023, the first Umganu share sale raised R6 million. The company later moved its listing to the JSE, where the linked shares trade under the code BACA.
Pietersen’s stake was later reduced to 24 percent after Pinpoint Properties and Frontline Capital each acquired 13 percent stakes.
A lodge with investment appeal
Recent financial updates suggest the property has held steady. Total occupied nights increased by 19 percent between August 2024 and August 2025, average occupancy rose from 40 percent to 43 percent, and the average stay remained four nights. The property’s equity value was reported at R46.2 million.
That is what gives Umganu Lodge its extra edge. It is not only a luxury villa near one of South Africa’s most famous parks. It also sits at the intersection of safari travel, celebrity ownership, and a modern investment model that has turned plenty of heads.
