268 inmates to write matric exams at correctional schools
A growing number of inmates are preparing for their matric examinations, with 268 candidates registered at 18 correctional services schools across South Africa this year.
For 268 inmates across South Africa, the 2026 matric examinations represent an opportunity to put months of studying and classroom work to the test.
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has confirmed that 268 Grade 12 candidates will sit for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, up from 171 candidates in 2025.
The increase of 56.7% comes as the department continues to provide formal education to incarcerated individuals, with the aim of supporting rehabilitation and creating opportunities for further study and employment after release.
Correctional Services encourages candidates to stay focused
National Commissioner of Correctional Services Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale has urged candidates to remain disciplined and trust the preparation they have put into their studies.
He highlighted the importance of attending classes, working with educators and learning alongside fellow inmates as candidates prepare for their examinations.
The department has also acknowledged the role of teachers, school principals and correctional officials in helping learners access education while serving their sentences.
Education and rehabilitation go hand in hand
Education remains an important part of the department’s rehabilitation efforts. Through its correctional schools, the DCS aims to give inmates the opportunity to complete their schooling and consider further education or other opportunities when they return to their communities.
The department also provides vocational training and other rehabilitation programmes intended to equip offenders with practical skills for life beyond correctional facilities.
While completing matric does not guarantee employment or further study, obtaining a National Senior Certificate can provide an important academic foundation for pursuing those options.
Department hopes for another strong matric performance
The increase in candidates follows a 94.4% overall pass rate achieved by correctional services schools in the 2025 NSC examinations.
The department is now looking ahead to the release of the 2026 results in January 2027, with hopes that more of its correctional schools will achieve a 100% pass rate.
The DCS has confirmed that arrangements are in place to support all 268 candidates throughout the examination period.
Their results will provide a measure of this year’s academic performance, while the growing number of participants highlights the role that access to education can play in rehabilitation and preparing for life after incarceration.
