EFF Marches in Rain to Protest Joburg Water Cuts, Demands End to Watershedding

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members braved the rain on Monday, 3 March 2025, to march to Joburg Water’s offices, demanding an immediate end to water shedding and accountability for the city’s ongoing water crisis. The protest comes as Johannesburg residents continue to grapple with erratic water supply, blamed on ageing infrastructure and high demand.

Nkululeko Dunga, EFF Gauteng provincial chairperson, condemned the city’s decision to cut water supply to residents deemed in debt, calling it a violation of human rights.
“The City of Johannesburg is not only restricting water to its citizens but is actually cutting off water supply to people they deem are in debt. We are marching against that. We are also marching for the allocation of 33% of the entire budget, which is not being thoroughly used,” Dunga said.
The EFF is demanding a sustainable water supply for all residents, alongside greater transparency in the use of the city’s budget for water services.

The water crisis in Johannesburg has been attributed to outdated infrastructure and increased demand, with Joburg Water struggling to maintain consistent supply. The utility has implemented water throttling measures to manage the situation, but these have done little to address the underlying issues.
Dumisani Baleni, EFF Gauteng spokesperson, emphasized the need for infrastructure investment and an investigation into the Joburg Water Board’s operations.
“Part of the EFF’s demands is an end to water shedding. There should be investment in the maintenance and expansion of the city’s infrastructure. There should also be an investigation into the skill set of those serving on the Joburg Water Board, as the ANC has used it to entrench patronage and party factions,” Baleni said.
Johannesburg residents have faced water supply disruptions for months, with many areas experiencing low water pressure or no water at all. The EFF’s protest highlights the growing frustration among citizens and the urgent need for solutions.
