Hunt for Husband After 29-Year-Old Woman is Brutally Murdered in Free State

Police have condemned the tragic murder of a 29-year-old woman who was shot multiple times, allegedly by her husband. The incident, which unfolded in the Free State, has sparked a manhunt as authorities work to track down the suspect, believed to have fled to Zimbabwe.
On January 20, 2025, police in Musina received a tip-off about a white Ford Ranger with Limpopo registration parked at a residence in Campbell. The vehicle had been reported missing from Moroka, Gauteng, since Friday.
According to Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Limpopo police rushed to the scene and found the bakkie. The homeowner explained that he had been asked by the vehicle’s male owner to store the bakkie. The suspect allegedly borrowed a significant amount of money and stated he was heading to Zimbabwe for “spiritual assistance.”
Upon inspecting the vehicle, police discovered disturbing evidence, including:
- Bloodstains inside the bakkie
- Two empty rifle cartridges
- Three empty 9mm cartridges
- One fragment of 9mm ammunition
- Two black pistol magazines (one loaded with 15 rounds)
- A pair of black gloves
A 24-year-old man suspected of being linked to the incident was arrested during an intelligence-driven operation in the Tshamutumbu policing area. The suspect was found in possession of two firearms, including a hunting rifle and ammunition.
Following the arrest, police discovered the woman’s lifeless body in bushes along the N1 in Kromdraai, Free State, late Wednesday night. She had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigations revealed that the husband, 34-year-old Dakalo Nemangwele, passed through the Verkeerdeveli toll gate alone on January 17. The woman’s body was found near a turn-off at Kromdraai, where Nemangwele is believed to have left her remains.
Provincial Police Commissioner in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, expressed outrage over the “senseless shooting,” calling for swift justice for the victim.
Authorities are actively searching for Nemangwele, who police believe can assist with the ongoing murder investigation.
The South African Police Service has urged anyone with information on Nemangwele’s whereabouts to come forward. Lieutenant Colonel Shuhani Rendani can be reached at 082 414 6683, Crime Stop at 08600 1011, or via the MySAPSApp.
The investigation continues as police work to ensure the suspect is brought to justice.
