Joburg Crackdown: 165 Drunk Drivers Arrested in Major Road Safety Blitz

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has intensified its crackdown on drunk driving, arresting 165 motorists in just one week. The operation, aimed at improving road safety, focused on high-risk areas, particularly the city’s inner region.
JMPD Chief Patrick Jaca confirmed that arrests were the result of roadblocks, increased police visibility, and public tip-offs. He emphasized that the department remains committed to removing intoxicated drivers from the roads.
“The high number of arrests in the Inner City reflects our focused efforts in this area and serves as a stark reminder that we are serious about enforcing the law,” said Jaca. “If you drink and drive in Johannesburg, you will be arrested.”
Drivers caught under the influence face severe legal repercussions, including possible imprisonment and licence suspension. However, while law enforcement is cracking down, South African prosecutors struggle with a low conviction rate—just 7% of drunk driving cases lead to successful prosecution, according to South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD).
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) estimates that alcohol contributes to 27% of road fatalities. Experts warn that impaired judgment, slower reaction times, and reduced coordination significantly increase the risk of accidents.
JMPD’s ongoing operations signal a firm stance against reckless driving, with continued enforcement efforts expected to curb road fatalities linked to alcohol consumption.
