Johannesburg Launches Citywide Water and Electricity Meter Verification in May

Residents across Johannesburg should expect visits from meter verification teams this May, as the City embarks on a month-long effort to improve billing accuracy and optimise revenue generation.
According to the municipality, the water and electricity meter verification project will run from 5 to 30 May 2025 across multiple suburbs in a phased approach. The City has appointed Omnitell Tech to carry out the verification process, with teams operating daily from 8 AM to 5 PM.
The goal is to ensure that each household’s meter is accurately matched to the correct municipal account, eliminating estimated readings and improving customer satisfaction.
“The project will go a long way in responding to customer complaints about receiving estimated meter readings,” said Kgamanyane Maphologela, Director of Communications and Stakeholder Engagement for Group Finance. “We urge residents to fully cooperate and allow technicians access to their properties.”
How the Verification Will Work
Meter readers will be split into four groups, each covering different areas during a specific week. All readers will carry official City-issued ID cards showing their full name and ID number and will travel in branded vehicles.
Residents who are unsure or wish to verify a meter reader’s identity can contact the City’s call centre at 0860 562 874 or speak to a chatbot via WhatsApp on 083 314 9640.
“Accurate on-site meter readings will allow the City to bill residents fairly and improve service delivery,” Maphologela added.

Why This Matters
This verification initiative is part of Johannesburg’s broader effort to ensure reliable municipal billing, address long-standing customer grievances, and improve financial efficiency in the city’s service delivery model.
Residents are encouraged to be vigilant, but cooperative, as this project unfolds. Allowing verified teams access to meters will ensure more accurate consumption records, fewer billing errors, and better long-term service outcomes.
