The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has failed to locate a luxury Bentley during a search at a Midrand property in Johannesburg as it pursues eight vehicles allegedly hidden by businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela.

The operation took place on Friday, 30 October, after an anonymous whistleblower alleged that Maumela’s Bentley had been concealed at a property belonging to an associate. According to the SIU’s official statement, investigators and the SIU-appointed curator visited the premises to verify the information, but the vehicle was not found.

The unit said the curator would continue pursuing all eight outstanding vehicles in accordance with previous court orders.

Eight luxury vehicles remain outstanding

The SIU said a Special Tribunal order issued in October 2025 directed the so-called Maumela Syndicate to provide a full and frank disclosure, under oath, of its assets and properties.

The unit previously obtained an order to preserve assets valued at R900 million linked to the syndicate. It continues tracing additional properties, assets and funds as part of the investigation.

The SIU is empowered to institute civil proceedings to recover losses suffered by the State, while evidence pointing to possible criminal conduct will be referred to the National Prosecuting Authority for further action.
