A 48-year-old man, later identified as Phillie Vhuma, drowned at Tzaneen Dam in Limpopo on Sunday morning after jumping into the water.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng, the incident took place around 7:00 am. A witness, who was exercising nearby, spotted a man standing on the bridge, appearing deep in thought. He was wearing a yellow t-shirt and dark pants.

An hour later, the witness saw the man leap into the water, struggle to stay afloat, and eventually disappear beneath the surface.

Authorities were alerted, and the SAPS Search and Rescue Team arrived at the scene to retrieve the body. Vhuma was later identified by his family.

Police have opened an inquest docket as investigations continue into the circumstances leading to his death.
