In a landmark move, the South African government has announced an increase in the national minimum wage to R28.79 per hour, effective from 1 March 2025.

The decision, which was confirmed by the Department of Employment and Labour, aims to address growing concerns over inflation and the rising cost of living. The new rate represents a significant increase from the previous minimum wage of R23.19 per hour, which has been in place since 2022.

Minister of Employment and Labour Thulas Nxesi expressed confidence that the wage increase would help lift millions of South Africans out of poverty and improve the overall standard of living for workers across the country.

The announcement has received mixed reactions, with labor unions largely welcoming the increase as a step towards fairer pay for South Africa’s working class. However, some businesses have expressed concerns about the impact on their operations, particularly in sectors where profit margins are tight.
