Rea Vaya Suspends Services Following Shooting Incident in Soweto

Rea Vaya, Johannesburg’s bus rapid transit service, has temporarily suspended its operations following a shooting incident involving bus drivers in Soweto on the night of 4 February. The bus company confirmed the suspension via social media, advising passengers to use alternative public transport until further notice.
The Incident
The shooting took place late on Monday, leading to immediate safety concerns for the staff and passengers. In a post shared on their official social media accounts, Rea Vaya confirmed the disruption, urging commuters to seek other forms of transport. “Rea Vaya passengers are advised that buses are temporarily suspended due to shooting incidents involving bus drivers last night in Soweto. Regular updates on the situation will be provided,” the post stated.
Previous Challenges with Public Transport in the Area
This comes after a series of challenges for Rea Vaya. In 2024, the bus company found itself in a legal battle with a local taxi association, following the rollout of its new fleet. The taxi association argued that the buses had been deployed with incorrect registration plates, causing further tension in the transport sector.
Recent Violence Targeting Transport
This shooting incident is not an isolated case of violence affecting the transport sector. Just a week earlier, 51 Putco buses were torched in Mpumalanga. The attacks occurred in multiple locations, including Kwamhlanga, with suspects using a white Toyota Quantum to set the buses alight. Security personnel were injured during the attacks, which have heightened concerns over public transport safety.
Putco Bus Attacks and Arrests
Police have arrested two men, aged 29 and 37, in connection with the attacks on the Putco buses. The men face charges of malicious damage to property and business robbery. The incidents have raised alarm over the ongoing safety issues surrounding South Africa’s public transport system.
Moving Forward
For now, passengers who rely on Rea Vaya for daily commutes are advised to find alternative means of transport as the bus service remains suspended. Authorities are expected to issue further updates on the situation in the coming days.
The safety of commuters and bus drivers remains a priority, and Rea Vaya is working closely with law enforcement to resolve the issue. In the meantime, updates will be shared through official channels to ensure the public remains informed.
