SAPS Trainer Arrested for Alleged Rape of Trainee at Tshwane Academy

A trainer at the South African Police Service (SAPS) academy in Tshwane has been arrested for allegedly raping a young trainee. The incident, which took place earlier this week, has sparked widespread condemnation from the Police Ministry and raised serious concerns about safety within the police training environment.
Trainer Arrested and Removed from Academy
The alleged rape occurred on Tuesday, 6 May 2025. In response, SAPS confirmed that the trainer was removed from the police academy on Thursday to safeguard other trainees. The suspect was arrested shortly after the allegation was reported and is expected to appear in court on Friday.
“The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit has ensured that the victim receives both medical care and ongoing emotional and psychological support,” said Police Ministry spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi.
Police Ministry Condemns Alleged Crime
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu issued a stern condemnation, calling the incident “a disgraceful abuse of authority” and a “gross violation of trust.”
“We welcome the swift removal and arrest of the instructor. This act is criminal, reprehensible, and inexcusable. It undermines the integrity of SAPS and disrespects the values that thousands of dedicated officers stand for,” said Mchunu.
IPID Assigned to Investigation
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has taken over the investigation. Mchunu urged the directorate to “leave no stone unturned” in its efforts to ensure justice is served swiftly and transparently.
“We call for immediate internal processes. Let this send a clear message: no one is above the law,” said the minister.
Public Outrage and Call for Accountability
The arrest has triggered public outrage and renewed calls for stricter vetting and oversight within police training academies. Advocacy groups have emphasized the need for zero tolerance of gender-based violence, particularly in environments meant to uphold law and justice.
The SAPS academy is meant to be a place of learning, growth, and preparation for national service — not a setting where young recruits are subjected to violence by those in positions of power.
As the investigation unfolds, many South Africans are watching closely, hoping for swift accountability and long-term changes that ensure such incidents never happen again.
