Fadiel Adams and MK Party Dismiss SONA 2025 as Political Farce

National Coloured Congress leader Fadiel Adams made it clear that he had little faith in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) 2025. Speaking on the red carpet outside Cape Town City Hall on Thursday, Adams said he expected nothing from the address, calling it a futile exercise.
The 2025 SONA comes at a pivotal time for South Africa, with the country navigating economic struggles, high unemployment, and political uncertainty. This is also the first address under the seventh administration’s Government of National Unity (GNU) following the May 2024 elections.
Adams criticized Ramaphosa’s decision to include the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the GNU, arguing that the party has consistently opposed progressive policies meant to uplift the poor. He pointed to legislation such as the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill, Land Expropriation Bill, and National Health Insurance (NHI) as examples of initiatives the DA has resisted.
“Every initiative aimed at lifting our poor citizens out of poverty has faced resistance from the DA, yet the president claims to act in our best interests. We don’t expect anything from him tonight,” Adams said.
He went on to predict that this could be Ramaphosa’s final address as president, saying, “Maybe this SONA tonight is the euthanisation of Ramaphosa and his GNU.”

MK Party Calls SONA a ‘Fake Address’
Meanwhile, the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party also dismissed the event. Party parliamentary chief whip Mzwanele Manyi said former president Jacob Zuma would not attend, citing a court matter.
“He is not going to miss anything. It is going to be a fake address anyway,” Manyi told SABC.
Herman Mashaba: ‘South Africans Are Tired of Lies’
ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba also weighed in, releasing an alternative SONA statement in which he accused the government of deceiving citizens year after year.
“For years, SONA has been nothing more than a grand production filled with distractions, illusions, and lies repeated year after year. South Africans are tired of being lied to,” Mashaba said.
As Ramaphosa prepared to deliver his address, criticism mounted from opposition leaders who believe SONA has become a meaningless tradition, offering little hope for real change in the country.
