South Africa to Withdraw Troops from DR Congo as Regional Summit Approaches

Published

on

South Africa has announced plans to withdraw its troops from the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) conflict-ridden east, as President Cyril Ramaphosa prepares for a regional summit in Tanzania aimed at addressing the escalating crisis.

The decision comes amid rising casualties and criticism of the SADC mission’s effectiveness, with at least 14 South African soldiers killed in recent clashes with M23 rebels.

SADC Mission Faces Growing Scrutiny

South Africa’s military presence in the DRC is part of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Mission in DR Congo (SAMIDRC), a regional force deployed to help combat armed groups. However, the fall of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, has raised serious questions about the mission’s ability to contain the rebels.

The Malawian government has also announced a troop withdrawal, signaling broader dissatisfaction within the SADC alliance over the mission’s effectiveness.

Key Developments in the DR Congo Crisis:

  • At least 20 peacekeepers killed, including 14 South Africans, as M23 rebels advance
  • Malawi also withdrawing troops, following a stalled ceasefire declaration
  • South African soldiers report worsening conditions at their bases
  • Regional summit in Tanzania aims to forge a new strategy for peacekeeping efforts

Why Is South Africa Withdrawing Its Troops?

While President Ramaphosa reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to African peace efforts, military analysts have described the mission as a failure.

“The SADC force has essentially been neutralized… its troops are confined to their bases. That represents complete mission failure,” said South African defense analyst Helmoed Heitman.

The decision to pull troops out of the DRC appears to reflect a shift towards diplomatic solutions, as military efforts have failed to halt the conflict.

Tanzania Summit: A Turning Point for African Security?

With the crisis deepening, Tanzania will host a high-stakes summit on February 8, bringing together leaders from the SADC and East African Community (EAC).

Expected attendees include:

  • President Félix Tshisekedi (DR Congo)
  • President Paul Kagame (Rwanda)
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa (South Africa)
  • Key leaders from Kenya, Tanzania, and other African nations

The summit aims to coordinate regional efforts, address humanitarian concerns, and discuss long-term solutions for peace in the DRC.

What’s Next for DR Congo?

With millions displaced and fighting intensifying, the international community is watching closely. Will regional leaders take decisive action, or will the crisis continue to spiral out of control?

For now, South Africa’s troop withdrawal signals a major shift—but whether diplomacy can succeed where military efforts have failed remains to be seen.
