Addo Elephant National Park gets a R136.5m boost what visitors can expect
SANParks has invested R136.5m in Addo upgrades. Some facilities are open now; more accommodation, a pool and a solar plant are due by Dec 2026. Check availability.
What is already open to visitors
Work at Addo is already delivering new guest-facing facilities. Eight modern family accommodation units have been completed and are open to the public. A new spa has also been finished and is in use by guests. In addition, the project has delivered essential upgrades to the park’s bulk infrastructure, including sewer and electrical systems.
What to expect before the December 2026 holidays
SANParks has set a timeline for further works aimed at expanding visitor capacity and improving existing facilities. The main items scheduled to be completed and open to the public by December 2026 are:
- Additional new accommodation units;
- Refurbished existing accommodation units;
- A refurbished guest house;
- A new swimming pool.
Road maintenance is also under way across the park to support visitor access.
Community Lodge and energy infrastructure
A 10-unit Community Lodge is due for completion by December 2026 and is scheduled to open and begin operations in January 2027. Separately, a 705-kW grid-tied solar plant has been completed and is set for commissioning in January 2027, adding a modern energy component to the park’s operational infrastructure.
Priorities for visitor comfort and access
SANParks has said it will prioritise urgent upgrades to ablutions and hiking trails, among other facilities, as part of the revitalisation programme. These elements aim to improve both basic comfort and the quality of outdoor visitor experiences.
“Having previously visited the Addo Elephant National Park, I am aware that there are many challenges that have been faced relating to the condition of basic infrastructure and facilities. I was pleased to see the scale of the work that is now underway, with numerous facilities planned for completion in time for the December holidays,”
Those remarks were made by the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, David Maynier, during a visit to the construction projects and new facilities on 19 October 2026. The minister also emphasised the centrality of visitor experience to the revitalisation programme:
“The guest experience must be a key focus of the revitalisation of our national parks, including the Addo Elephant National Park. Visitors should experience the very best South Africa has to offer in terms of quality accommodation and facilities, with options at multiple price points,”
What this means for Gauteng visitors
For travellers from Johannesburg and other parts of Gauteng planning a break at Addo over the summer holidays, the upgrades mean a mix of ready-to-use and soon-to-open options. Some improvements are available now notably the modern family units and the spa while more accommodation, a refurbished guest house and a swimming pool are expected before the December holidays.
As with any park undergoing active construction and commissioning, practical details such as unit availability, facility opening dates and road conditions can change. Visitors are advised to confirm current availability and opening status with SANParks before making bookings.
Why the upgrades matter
The programme is positioned as both a visitor-focused and an operationally focused investment. Upgraded accommodation and guest facilities expand choices for different budgets and group types, while infrastructure work including electrical and sewer upgrades and the grid-tied solar plant addresses longer-term sustainability and resilience of park services.
Improved ablutions and hiking trails also matter for everyday visitor experience: better-maintained paths and sanitary facilities make outdoor activities safer and more enjoyable, and support the park’s role as a major tourism destination in the Eastern Cape.
Planning your visit
- Check which accommodation types are currently open and which are scheduled to open before December 2026;
- Confirm whether facilities you need for example the spa or the pool are available for the dates you intend to travel;
- Allow for possible road maintenance or closures within the park when planning travel times;
- Expect a continued focus on upgrades to hiking trails and ablutions as part of ongoing works.
The R136.5 million investment represents a concentrated effort by SANParks to upgrade visitor-facing amenities and essential infrastructure at Addo Elephant National Park. For many visitors, the coming months should bring a noticeable increase in available accommodation options and improved facilities; for the park, the updates are part of a broader push to strengthen operational sustainability and the quality of the guest experience.
