NC Hits Pause On Senzo Mchunu’s Political Comeback As Investigations Continue

Senzo Mchunu’s path back into frontline politics is proving far from straightforward. While the former Police Minister appears ready to step back into the fold, the ANC leadership is taking a more cautious approach, effectively pressing pause on any immediate return.

At the centre of it all is a simple reality. The party is not yet convinced that the matter surrounding Mchunu has been fully settled.

Mchunu Still Waiting For The Green Light

Despite making appearances and signalling his readiness to resume duties, Mchunu remains in limbo. His spokesperson has confirmed that there has been no official word from the ANC on when, or if, he can return to his role as a member of the party’s National Executive Committee.

This uncertainty follows months of controversy sparked by serious allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Those claims included accusations that Mchunu ordered the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team without proper consultation and for questionable reasons.

Mchunu has consistently denied wrongdoing. He has already appeared before both Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee and the Madlanga Commission, where he rejected claims of corruption, interference in policing, or links to criminal networks.

Why The ANC Is Holding Back

Inside the ANC, the issue is not only about Mchunu’s version of events. It is also about process and timing.

The party has made it clear that his initial decision to step aside was acknowledged and supported by leadership. That, in turn, means his return cannot be a personal decision alone. It must go through the same structures that approved his absence.

Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula reinforced this position, stating that Mchunu still needs to make formal representations to the ANC’s Integrity Commission as well as national officials. Only after that process will the National Executive Committee decide his political future.

Adding to the delay is the fact that investigations are still ongoing. The Madlanga Commission has not wrapped up its work, and Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee has also not reached final conclusions. Until those processes are complete, the ANC appears unwilling to move forward.

A Timeline That Could Affect Elections

The timing of all this could have real political consequences. The Madlanga Commission’s term has already been extended to August, with the possibility of another extension on the table.

If that happens, Mchunu may find himself sidelined during a critical period. With local government elections approaching, the ANC typically relies on experienced figures to campaign and stabilise support, especially in politically sensitive provinces like KwaZulu-Natal.

For now, that door remains closed.

A Political Balancing Act

Mchunu believes his testimony has cleared his name. His recent public appearance at a funeral in Richards Bay suggested he was ready to re-enter political life. However, the ANC leadership is signalling something different.

This is about more than one individual. It reflects a broader balancing act within the party, between protecting its image and ensuring due process is followed.

For Mchunu, the message is clear. The comeback will not happen on his terms alone.
