Arrest made after Malmesbury mass shooting that injured toddler and nine others
Police have arrested a 27-year-old in connection with a mass shooting in Malmesbury that left two people dead and eight others seriously injured, including a one-year-old toddler who was shot in the face. The attack took place during the early hours of Sunday, July 12, in a house in Wesbank.
Arrest and court appearance
Western Cape police confirmed the suspect was detained on Monday, July 13, following what authorities described as an intensive investigation by SAPS detectives. The suspect is expected to appear in the Malmesbury Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, July 14, on charges related to the incident.
Victims and ongoing investigation
Police said the mass shooting claimed the lives of a 22-year-old man and a 21-year-old pregnant woman, who was the mother of the injured toddler. Authorities said the number of attempted murder victims has increased from seven to eight, while the fatalities remain at two.
Detectives are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and to establish whether additional suspects were involved.
Security and community warnings
Police said they are monitoring tensions in the area to prevent further violence and possible retaliatory attacks.

Background
The incident follows another mass shooting in the area on June 24 that left two people dead and three others injured. In that earlier attack, alleged Mongrels gang leader Ralph “Frog” Philander was shot dead.
“An intensive investigation by SAPS detectives has resulted in the arrest of a 27-year-old suspect in connection with a fatal shooting incident that occurred in Wesbank, Malmesbury, during the early hours of Sunday, July 12, 2026,” Colonel André Traut said.
