Checkers to introduce Gauteng’s first smart shopping trolleys

Shoppers in Centurion will soon be able to skip traditional checkout queues as Checkers prepares to introduce Gauteng’s first Xpress Trolley smart shopping carts, Joburg ETC reports.

The Shoprite Group has opened a new Checkers FX, UNIQ Clothing by Checkers and Petshop Science at Eastway Midstream Estate, creating 72 new jobs, according to the Group’s official announcement.

The new Checkers store is set to introduce the technology in the coming weeks, following trials at two stores in the Western Cape.

The Xpress Trolleys allow customers to scan products as they shop, monitor their running total and pay directly from the trolley without visiting a traditional till. The carts also offer product information, personalised promotions and in-store navigation.

Customers can use the Xpress Trolley at Checkers Midstream, the first store in Gauteng to roll out the technology, which enables shoppers to scan products, track their spend and pay directly on the trolley.

Checkers FX Midstream branch manager Bongani Chabalala said: ‘Our team is looking forward to welcoming shoppers and delivering the customer-first service and world-class shopping experience they have come to expect from Checkers.’

The store also features a Meat Market, bakery, deli, fresh produce, sushi and smoothie bar, Krispy Kreme doughnuts and a Money Market counter.

The opening expands the Group’s retail offering in the area, with UNIQ providing clothing for women, men and children, while Petshop Science stocks pet food, treats and toys.
