Father accused of killing daughters aged 1 and 11 arrested after manhunt

A 34-year-old father accused of poisoning his family and killing his two young daughters has been arrested in Germiston following a manhunt by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD).

The children, aged one and 11, died after an alleged poisoning incident on Tuesday. Their mother and another daughter survived and are reportedly receiving medical attention.

EMPD Community Liaison Unit officers arrested the suspect on Thursday after following up on information about his whereabouts.

Father accused of poisoning family

EMPD spokesperson Millicent Kekana said officers received information from a reliable source that the suspect had allegedly poured sleeping pills into his family’s food.

Two of his daughters were declared dead at the scene, while his wife and another daughter survived.

The suspect allegedly fled after the incident, prompting officers to launch a search.

“Officers went on the hunt, followed up on the leads, and successfully apprehended the suspect at the corner of Lambert and Prince in the Germiston area,” Kekana said.

The man faces two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder relating to his wife and surviving daughter.

He was detained at Germiston Police Station and is expected to appear before the Germiston Magistrates’ Court.

The allegations have yet to be tested in court.

Suspected hijacker killed after police chase in Durban

In a separate incident earlier this week, a suspected hijacker was shot dead following a police chase and gun battle in Umbilo, KwaZulu-Natal.

Police said officers on routine patrol spotted the suspect firing shots next to a BMW on Clark Road.

After exchanging gunfire with police, the suspect allegedly hijacked an e-hailing vehicle at gunpoint and continued shooting while driving away.

SAPS and metro police officers pursued the vehicle before the suspect lost control and crashed into a residential property.

The suspect was declared dead at the scene.

BMW owner injured in shooting

Police confirmed that the owner of the BMW was shot and injured during the incident.

Authorities also dismissed reports that a bystander or student had been struck by a stray bullet.

No police officers were injured, although several police vehicles were hit by gunfire.

Investigations into the Umbilo shooting are continuing.
