Gauteng set for spring-like spell as temperatures climb into mid-20s

Published

on

Gauteng residents can expect a stretch of spring-like weather later this week, with daytime temperatures climbing into the mid-20s and mostly sunny afternoons, according to the latest forecast.

Warm spell begins from Thursday

The South African Weather Service forecasts warmer conditions for Gauteng from Thursday, with similar improvements expected in Mpumalanga, Limpopo and the North West. Daytime temperatures in some parts of those provinces are predicted to reach as high as 28°C.

City-by-city outlook

In Pretoria, temperatures were forecast to peak at 24°C on Wednesday and Thursday before rising to 26°C over the weekend, with morning lows around 7°C. In Johannesburg, residents should expect continued cold mornings but warmer afternoons, with daytime highs of 21–22°C for most of the week climbing to 24°C on Saturday.

July conditions and short-term outlook

July has produced a mix of cool to warm conditions across most provinces, and some areas of Gauteng experienced chilly mornings with temperatures dropping to -1°C. Unlike the southern parts of the country, the northern provinces did not see a major cold front this month, resulting in mostly sunny afternoons and cool to warm daytime conditions.

What comes after the warm spell

Early forecasts for next week indicate temperatures in the province are likely to drop by about 3°C and that cloudy conditions are expected. Forecasters did not expect rain or a cold front in the northern parts of the country.

Weekend prospects

The South African Weather Service has forecast warm and sunny conditions across Gauteng and the three neighbouring provinces, which should provide favourable weather for outdoor activities planned by many South Africans for Mandela Day throughout the weekend.
