Acting on a tip-off about a white truck with Mpumalanga registration plates allegedly hauling stolen chrome from the R37 near Mogodi village towards Gauteng, police launched an immediate search operation. Officers soon spotted a matching vehicle accompanied by red side tippers and conducted a stop-and-search.
No Papers, Immediate Arrest
Upon inspection, the side tippers were found loaded with chrome. The driver and his passenger, aged 36 and 42, could not produce any documentation authorising the possession or transportation of the precious metal. They were promptly arrested for the illegal possession and transportation of suspected stolen precious metals.
In a significant blow to the alleged operation, police seized not only the chrome but also the Scania truck and side tippers, with the total vehicle value estimated at R1.2 million. The seizure underscores the authorities’ tactic of targeting the assets used in the commission of such crimes, aiming to disrupt the logistics of illicit mining syndicates.
Part of a Broader Crackdown
The two suspects are scheduled to appear before the Thabamoopo Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 13 January 2026, as police continue their investigations. This interception is part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining and the trafficking of precious minerals, which cost the South African economy billions annually and are often linked to organized crime.
The bust highlights the persistent challenge of chrome theft in the mineral-rich province, but also demonstrates the potential effectiveness of coordinated intelligence and swift police action on major transport routes. For the suspects, the loss of a multi-million rand truck may prove a heavier penalty than the chrome they were allegedly caught with.
