Janine Lochrenberg killed in East London shark incident

A morning swim at East London’s Orient Beach ended in tragedy on Tuesday after 65-year-old Janine Lochrenberg, a retired nuclear radiographer and musician, died following an incident with a shark.

According to the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, the incident has prompted the closure of two popular beaches in KuGompo City, with authorities warning the public to stay out of the water while safety measures remain in place,

Lochrenberg, a member of the East London Open Water Swimmers Association, was swimming shortly after 08:00 when she signalled she was in trouble. Fellow swimmers rushed to help, but despite their efforts and emergency treatment on the beach, she died at the scene.

Reportedly, several members of the swimming group responded after noticing Lochrenberg’s distress signal.

Two swimmers reached her first and helped bring her back to shore, with assistance from her son, who is an Olympian. Mike Louw, a fellow swimmer, said the group soon realised she had suffered serious injuries.

‘We all swam to her and when we got there… I realised, we all realised, she had been bitten by a shark and she was in a very bad way.’

Lochrenberg reportedly wore a magnetic shark deterrent band when the incident happened. She sustained severe injuries to her right arm and thigh, with the wounds believed to be consistent with a single bite. A medic who was part of the swimming group administered emergency care on the beach. However, Lochrenberg could not be saved.

Orient and Eastern beaches closed

According to the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, Orient Beach and Eastern Beach have been closed until further notice following the incident. In a public safety notice issued on Facebook, the municipality confirmed that a shark incident had taken place and urged beachgoers to avoid entering the water at the affected locations.

‘Members of the public are requested to remain vigilant, adhere to all safety advisories, and comply with instructions issued by the relevant authorities.’

Warnings have also been issued at other beaches as officials continue to monitor the situation. The municipality said further updates would be shared as more information becomes available.

The closures are an important precaution for residents and visitors who regularly use East London’s beaches for swimming, exercise and other recreational activities. Anyone planning a trip to the coast should check for updated notices before heading into the water.

Police open an inquest

South African Police Service officers attended the scene and transferred Lochrenberg’s body to State Forensic Pathology Services. An inquest docket has been opened as part of the process to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.

The incident has also drawn attention to the risks associated with open-water swimming, particularly along a coastline where conditions and marine activity can change.

Although shark encounters are an ongoing concern for some beachgoers, a fatal incident remains an uncommon event. The circumstances of this incident will need to be established through the relevant investigations.

A reminder for coastal swimmers

Lochrenberg was known among her fellow swimmers as someone who enjoyed swimming alone, according to the source reports.

Shark deterrent devices may offer an additional precaution, but they cannot guarantee protection against an incident. Swimming with others, paying attention to beach warnings and following local safety guidance remain important considerations for anyone entering the sea.

As the community comes to terms with Lochrenberg’s death, authorities are continuing to manage the incident and communicate safety information to the public.
