Motorists travelling on several Gauteng roads have been urged to remain alert after dark following a safety advisory shared on social media by private security company JBA Security, Joburg Etc reports.

The post identifies several routes around Pretoria and surrounding areas where motorists are advised to exercise caution and plan their journeys before heading out. It also highlights potential road hazards that drivers should watch for during both the day and night.

Roads highlighted in the safety advisory

  • JBA Security has identified the following roads as routes motorists should consider avoiding at night:
  • N4 east, between Silver Lakes and Donkerhoek, continuing towards Bronkhorstspruit.
  • N4 west, around Akasia and towards Brits Toll Plaza.
  • N1 north, between the N4 interchange and Maubane.
  • R80 Mabopane Highway, between Es’kia Mphahlele Drive and Soshanguve.
  • R21, near the N1 ‘Flying Saucer’ interchange.

The security company has also advised motorists to remain cautious around highway shoulders, off-ramps and isolated stopping areas.

Drivers are urged to look out for objects, rocks or suspected spikes in the road, as well as sudden tyre damage, particularly along quieter stretches.

Plan your route before heading out

Motorists visiting friends, travelling late at night or returning home after dark are encouraged to plan their routes in advance and remain aware of their surroundings.

JBA Security advises drivers who suspect road spiking and can still safely control their vehicles to proceed slowly to a well-lit, staffed location before calling for assistance.

The company notes that the locations listed are ‘previously reported caution locations, not official road closures or blanket no-go routes’. The information is a private security advisory and should not be interpreted as an official South African Police Service (SAPS) warning.

Emergency contact details

Motorists who require emergency assistance can contact the police on 10111. From a cellphone, emergency assistance is available on 112.
