Kagiso reservoirs critically low after Eikenhof power failure, municipality urges patience

Residents of Kagiso have been warned to limit water use after a power failure at the booster station supplying the area left several reservoirs at critically low levels.

What happened and when

According to The Citizen (Caxton Local Media), a power failure at the Eikenhof Booster Station occurred on Monday night, September 7, temporarily stopping pumping operations to Kagiso reservoirs.

The Citizen (Caxton Local Media) reports that, while the Kagiso Tower is 92% full, other storage points are near empty. The Kagiso Reservoir is 8% full, and the Kagiso Extension Reservoir stands at 6%.

Response from municipality

Mogale City Local Municipality’s assistant manager for media and PR, Refilwe Mahlangu, told The Citizen (Caxton Local Media) that power was restored early the next morning and pumping had resumed.

“Although power was restored early this morning and pumping has resumed, the outage had a severe impact on Kagiso’s system,”

“Our Water Services acknowledges the continuing impact of water supply challenges on residents in Kagiso, and we appreciate your cooperation and patience while teams are working to stabilise the system,” she concluded.

According to The Citizen (Caxton Local Media), pumping operations have resumed following restoration of power, but low reservoir levels persist. Residents have been warned to restrict water use while the system is stabilised.
