Kubayi and Motsoaledi welcome R326m asset forfeiture linked to Tembisa tender tycoon Hangwani Maumela

Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi and Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi have welcomed a Johannesburg High Court order forfeiting R326 million in assets linked to businessman and Tembisa Hospital tender figure Hangwani Maumela.

Court grants final forfeiture order

The Johannesburg High Court granted the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) a final order on Monday that strips assets tied to Maumela. Judge Sahida Mahomed granted the order, which the AFU says targets proceeds linked to the Tembisa Hospital corruption investigation.

Kubayi, through her spokesperson Palesa Rammitlwa, said the investigation followed information provided by the late whistle‑blower Babita Deokaran and described the order as a demonstration of the State’s commitment to deprive criminals of ill‑gotten wealth. “May her Soul Rest in Peace,” Rammitlwa said in a statement quoted by the court coverage.

Motsoaledi, via his spokesperson Foster Mohale, called the decision a “big milestone” and urged the AFU to speed up recovery of other assets linked to those involved in looting Tembisa Hospital. He said public servants implicated in enabling the alleged scheme still needed to have their assets and pensions dealt with and urged law enforcement to complete arrests and criminal prosecutions.

Assets covered by the order

The forfeiture order covers a portfolio of high‑value properties and luxury vehicles. Assets listed include an R88 million Bantry Bay mansion, a R69 million Sandhurst estate in Sandton, twin penthouses in Cape Town’s Three Anchor Bay valued at R41 million, multiple Lamborghini Aventadors and Urus SUVs, a Bentley Continental GT and a Regency 250 LE3 boat.
