KwaZulu‑Natal QuickPick wins R59m PowerBall after fasting and prayer
A KwaZulu‑Natal man has won the R59 million PowerBall jackpot after buying a QuickPick ticket and saying he had been fasting and praying. The National Lottery confirmed an anonymous claim was received last month by its regional office for KwaZulu‑Natal.
How the win unfolded
The unnamed player bought the ticket at a hardware store in KwaNdengezi, Durban. The entry was a QuickPick and matched the five main numbers and the PowerBall to take the top prize. The winning numbers were 3, 15, 18, 32, 33 and the PowerBall 12.
Fasting, prayer and checking the ticket
According to The South African, the man had been fasting and praying and said God told him to fast. The South African reported he covered himself in ash on the day he bought the ticket and spent the day praying, and that he carefully checked his ticket using the lottery’s website before visiting a Lotto store to double‑check the win.
Lottery response and next steps
The National Lottery confirmed the win and said the claim was received anonymously by its KwaZulu‑Natal regional office. A Lotto spokesperson advised the winner to seek financial advice. The National Lottery also reminded players to play responsibly and said it is committed to helping winners through its Player Support Programme, which provides counselling and financial management advice to winners.
Plans for the prize
According to The South African, the man plans to give some of the money to family and his church but had not yet announced any specific plans. The National Lottery allows winners to remain anonymous if they claim through a Lotto office, and the man chose to remain unnamed in the public statement.
