KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa – A KZN police officer is under investigation after a viral video surfaced showing him slapping a civilian. The incident has sparked outrage across social media, with the South African Police Service (SAPS) pledging accountability. KZN Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has condemned the officer’s actions, emphasizing that police officers are not above the law and must treat all citizens with respect and professionalism.
The video shows a KZN police officer slapping a civilian who does not appear to pose a threat. Another officer on the scene tries to de-escalate the situation, drawing public attention to concerns about accountability within SAPS. Following public outcry, SAPS confirmed that a full investigation is underway and that disciplinary action will follow as warranted.

Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi stated that SAPS officers must uphold the highest standards of conduct. “We cannot allow unprofessional behavior to undermine public trust,” he said. The KZN police officer in question will be held accountable according to SAPS guidelines and the South African Constitution.
