Three KZN taxi guards arrested after viral video of e‑hailing attack sparks attempted murder probe
Police in KwaZulu‑Natal arrested three security guards linked to a local taxi association after a violent roadside confrontation with an e‑hailing driver was captured on video and went viral. The arrests followed an incident on Wednesday morning, 3 June 2026, on the MR518 road and came after public outrage over the footage.
What happened
Police said the e‑hailing driver was picking up passengers on the MR518 when he was blocked by two security vehicles. The driver initially managed to drive away but was followed. One of the security vehicles bumped the e‑hailing vehicle, causing it to come to a standstill.
According to police, during that confrontation, one of the security guards shot the tyre of the e‑hailing vehicle while the other two allegedly assaulted the driver. Police officers who were in the vicinity rescued the driver.
Arrests and charges
The three guards aged 28, 41 and 49 were handcuffed by police in KwaNdengezi on Thursday. They face charges of attempted murder, malicious damage to property and assault. Police said the suspects will appear in court soon.
Police action and further probes
Police in KwaNdengezi contacted representatives of the taxi association, who cooperated and brought the implicated security guards to the police station.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu‑Natal, Major General Phumelele Makoba, said investigations will include the security company implicated in the incident and a compliance inspection.
“Security guards and anyone who owns a firearm must use firearms as stipulated in the Firearms Control Act,” Makoba said.
Makoba also warned that no one has the right to stop anyone from transporting passengers in their vehicle, and said three firearms were confiscated and would be sent to ballistics for analysis.
Investigation ongoing
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda provided the sequence of events leading to the arrests and said the police investigation revealed the details of the roadside clash. Investigations are continuing.
