KZN to host first Transport Indaba as infrastructure pressures mount

KwaZulu‑Natal will hold its first Transport Indaba on 1 and 2 October as the province confronts growing pressures on its transport system, provincial Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said.

Why an Indaba now?

Duma said the transport sector in the province is facing deteriorating roads, maintenance backlogs, capacity constraints and a growing threat of climate‑related damage to infrastructure. He announced the Indaba will take place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre during Transport Month and forms part of the Ten Point Plan implementation discussed during the budget speech last week.

Strategic pressures on KZN’s network

The province occupies a strategic position in the country’s transport and logistics network, serving as a gateway through the Port of Durban, major freight corridors and an extensive provincial road network that supports trade, tourism and rural accessibility. Duma said that positioning places considerable demand on transport infrastructure, requiring continuous investment, maintenance and optimisation.

Compounding challenges

The pressures identified include rapid urbanisation, rising freight volumes and the need to modernise public transport operations, the MEC said.

What the Indaba will address

According to the announcement, the Indaba aims to:

• Interrogate current issues affecting road, rail, maritime and aviation sectors;
• Explore innovative solutions and strengthen institutional coordination;
• Align infrastructure investment priorities with provincial and national development objectives;
• Discuss strategies to support trade, logistics, industrial growth, the energy transition and climate resilience.

Outcomes sought

Duma said the platform is intended to promote policy coherence, unlock collaboration and investment and, through structured engagements and thematic discussions, help shape a more resilient, efficient and sustainable transport system that supports long‑term economic development and improved service delivery across the province.
