Cape Town prison warden arrested after R65,000 worth of drugs seized at Goodwood roadblock
A 47-year-old Goodwood Prison warden was arrested after police seized drugs and phones at a Goodwood roadblock; items are valued at about R65,000.
A Cape Town prison warden was arrested on Wednesday after police found drugs and other items during a roadblock at Goodwood Prison.
Who was detained and where
The arrested person is a 47-year-old Goodwood Prison warden. He was arrested on Wednesday, August 12, and detained at the Goodwood police station. He will appear in Goodwood Magistrate’s Court once charged, the provincial police spokesperson said.
Operation and seizures
The arrest was made during a target-driven roadblock at Goodwood Prison, conducted by members of the SAPS Anti-Gang Unit and the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) Emergency Support Team. The operation took place at about 6:40am.
During a search of the warden’s vehicle, police found:
- 600 mandrax tablets
- 100 grams of tik
- 300 grams of dagga
- 23 cellular telephones
- three pairs of earpods
- five USB memory sticks
- 10 condoms
- 60 libido tablets
Captain Frederick van Wyk, the provincial police spokesperson, said the seized drugs are estimated to be worth R65,000.
Separate firearm arrest
Police also reported a separate arrest on Wednesday in Lansdowne. A 38-year-old man was detained in Derby Road after members of the Anti-Economic Crime Task Team and Provincial Counterfeit and Illicit Policing Team executed an intelligence-driven operation at about 3:15am.
Officers found a .38 Special revolver and 12 rounds of ammunition hidden between a mattress and the bed. Further searches uncovered two imitation firearms hidden in a wardrobe. The suspect was arrested and is expected to appear in court soon, police said.
Investigation and next steps
The SAPS Anti-Gang Unit and DCS Emergency Support Team led the Goodwood roadblock operation. The arrested warden will face charges related to dealing in drugs, according to police statements. The Lansdowne suspect will face charges concerning possession of a firearm and ammunition.
