Jumpers settlement in shock after mass shooting that left 12 dead
Twelve people were killed and at least ten others wounded when gunmen opened fire at multiple locations in the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland on the night of June 9, 2026. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects, who fled in a vehicle, and investigators have mobilised specialised teams to probe the attack.
What happened
According to IOL, police responded to reports of a shooting in progress in the informal settlement at about 11:10pm. Emergency Medical Services were summoned after officers found numerous victims with gunshot wounds.
Preliminary police investigations found that 12 people died as a result of the attack. Eight adult men and three adult women were declared dead at the scene, and another man later died in hospital. At least 10 other victims were taken to various medical facilities for treatment.
Police account and manhunt
Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a police spokesperson, said investigators believe more than 10 suspects were dropped off near a Cleveland petrol station by a white Toyota Quantum. The suspects allegedly entered the settlement through both entrances, moved through the area and opened fire on residents at multiple locations before fleeing in the same vehicle.
Provincial and district detectives, supported by crime intelligence and forensic experts, have been mobilised to investigate the incident and track down those responsible. The motive is unknown and forms part of the ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made.
Community reaction
According to IOL, when reporters visited the scene on Wednesday morning, scores of residents, some still dressed in sleepwear, had gathered near the crime scene. A heavy police presence remained, and evidence of violence, including bloodstains and spent bullet casings, was visible in the area.
Residents described waking to the sound of gunfire. Sthembiso Gibson Fakude, 38, told media he initially thought the noises were fireworks. He said the community was traumatised and suggested the violence could be linked to disputes over illegal mining shafts.
Eunice Sithole, an elderly resident, said she was woken by gunshots and hid under her bed. She said she knew that the shootings occurred at a tavern and expressed fear for her safety, recalling a previous killing in 2025.
Next steps
Forensic teams are examining the scene and collecting evidence, including spent bullet casings, as part of the investigation. Police have called on anyone with information to assist the probe.
